At Build, its developer conference, Microsoft announced a new service for organizations wishing to offer preconfigured, virtual machines for software developers. Microsoft Dev Box makes it easier to quickly set up new developer workstations, with all the tools and dependencies pre-loaded. With Dev Box, built on Windows 365, IT administrators can create operating system images and select hardware configurations with different CPU, storage, and RAM options. Using a portal, IT staff can easily install and delete Dev Boxes and even parallelize tasks across multiple machines. They can maintain Dev Boxes to recreate a client environment, keeping old applications or previous versions alive. “Microsoft Dev Box supports any developer IDE, SDK, or internal tool that runs on Windows," writes Microsoft product manager Anthony Cangialosi. The service is by invitation, but a public preview will come out in the next months.

Ars Technica, Andrew Cunningham, “Microsoft Dev Box will virtualize your Windows development PC in a browser window.”
