Group Transcribe is an application that came to life within the Garage program, an internal Microsoft brand meant to fuel employee innovation and creativity. This free iOS application makes it easy to accurately transcribe a meeting. This is how it works: all meeting participants must have downloaded the app to their phone. Then one of the participants starts the transcription and invites the others to join in. Everyone uses their own phone’s microphone for optimal sound pickup and identification of who is saying what. Two things happen in real time on phone screens: transcription and translation. Meetings can be held with people speaking many languages because with over 80 languages supported, the app automatically translates. “This can be a fantastic tool for communication. What I would love to see is for this to break down barriers for people speaking across multiple languages,” says Franklin Munoz, senior development manager for the project. Transcripts are saved in the app for you to review or share after the meeting. Microsoft says Group Transcribe has no limit on the number of people who can join a transcription, but notes that the app works best for meetings of up to four people. The app is available on the App Store.

Microsoft Garage, Lainie Huston, “New Garage project Group Transcribe helps you transcribe and translate while advancing inclusive speech AI.”

The Verge, Jay Peters, “Microsoft’s latest Garage app is for recording group transcriptions’.”
