Google is extending its “eco-friendly” map functionality to new countries so that users can find the most economical itinerary in terms of fuel, electric use and tolls, while still minding the ETA. The company says that “nearly forty” European countries, including France, Ireland, Poland, Spain and the UK now have access to this feature built on machine learning. To better filter the search results, you can tell the Google Maps app whether your car runs on a diesel, gas, hybrid, or electric engine. The system relies on information provided by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the European Environment Agency, combined with driving trends compiled by the Google Maps app.

The Verge, Mitchell Clark, “Google Maps can now tune its eco-friendly navigation for gas, diesel, and electrified vehicles.”
