In a blog post, Google announced that Chrome OS Flex, a version of its Chromebook operating system compatible with most hardware, is available for download. The company says that it has certified more than 400 computers, including systems by Apple, Dell and HP, ensuring stable and seamless operation on these machines. Chrome OS Flex is a good way to breathe new life into old PCs and Macs, especially for people who do most of their work in a browser window and don’t require specific Windows or Mac applications. You install Chrome OS Flex via a USB key. Chrome OS Flex can be loaded on a device not certified by Google if it meets minimal requirements (4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, Intel or AMD x86-64-bit chip), but you run the risk of running into some compatibility issues.

Chrome OS Flex was made possible thanks to Google’s purchase of Neverware in late 2020, a company that offered an application called CloudReady, which let users convert old PCs into Chrome OS systems.

The Verge, Tom Warren, “Google’s Chrome OS Flex is now available for old PCs and Macs.”
