The Context

After developing a brand-new custom ERP system in-house, ASEQ | Studentcare turned its attention to its next challenge: its student services platform, known internally as 705. Built on outdated technologies, the platform had become rigid and costly to both maintain and evolve. ASEQ | Studentcare aimed to modernize the application quickly to ensure reliable daily operations, diversify its service offering, and increase operational agility.

Spiria’s Discovery phase was a great source of inspiration for us. The quality and level of detail in the analysis and deliverables continue to guide our strategic decisions around the platform to this day.

The Solution

At the heart of ASEQ | Studentcare’s service delivery, the 705 web application allows insured students to view and modify certain aspects of their insurance coverage.

ASEQ | Studentcare’s services are governed by business rules that vary significantly between institutions and associations, requiring a complex application architecture. This diversity meant the new platform had to offer great flexibility and scalability, both technologically and functionally.

Key Objectives

For ASEQ, one thing was clear: 705 needed to become a platform that’s easy to improve; a scalable platform to which new features could be added easily. To achieve this, the tech stack had to be modernized, and the entire user experience needed to be redesigned.

1. Discovery

Before beginning development, a Discovery phase was conducted jointly by ASEQ | Studentcare and Spiria. This step helped define a clear strategic path by aligning the organization’s objectives and sub-goals with the real needs of its users and internal teams. This phase laid the groundwork for a sustainable and coherent solution, designed to scale alongside the organization for years to come.

2. Development

Modernizing the Tech Stack

The entire tech stack was reimagined from the ground up, establishing a modern, sustainable, and highly secure architecture. This transformation addressed several critical obstacles: high maintenance costs, cybersecurity risks, and technological rigidity that hindered software scalability. This essential work will allow the organization to redirect funds previously spent on maintenance toward more strategic initiatives that better align with its growth.

Improving the User Experience

For both employees and clients, the platform caused friction and inflexibility, making it difficult to deliver insurance services efficiently. To fix this, Spiria and ASEQ | Studentcare teams worked hand in hand to rethink the experience from start to end. Some features were removed, others enhanced, and a few were added, all with one goal in mind: to simplify user experience at every level.

  • The interface was redesigned and modernized, providing smooth navigation and a visual experience aligned with ASEQ | Studentcare’s brand;
  • The application’s structure was optimized to eliminate delays caused by high-volume manual tasks, especially during critical periods like back-to-school season;
  • Accessibility was ensured by complying with the W3C WCAG 2.0 Level AA standard, meeting AODA requirements;
  • The platform was adapted for mobile use; the preferred navigation mode for students.

The Results

The deployment of the platform is scheduled for the back-to-school season and ASEQ | Studentcare is already anticipating significant benefits, both operationally and in the user experience offered to its members.

Operational Gains:

  • Improved efficiency through faster financial reconciliation;
  • Reduced workload thanks to a significant decrease in manual tasks related to plan management;
  • Increased agility, allowing for rapid service evolution without complex development;
  • A redesigned interface aligned with ASEQ | Studentcare’s brand and focused on ease of use.

User Experience Gains:

  • Enhanced autonomy, enabling students to manage their coverage independently, without needing to contact customer service;
  • Easier access to information, with the ability to view plan details during preestablished periods;
  • A seamless experience, with fast, secure, and fully online transactions.
  • A new opt-out questionnaire was also introduced, allowing ASEQ | Studentcare to gain deeper insights into members’ needs and behaviours.

By working together, ASEQ | Studentcare and Spiria succeeded in eliminating several key pain points for internal teams and for students. The result: a tool that is easier to use, easier to scale, and better suited to real-world challenges. The new platform lays a solid foundation to meet ASEQ | Studentcare’s current and future needs, while simplifying the day-to-day management of its services.
