Samsung officially announced the construction of a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, at an estimated cost of around US$ 17 billion. This factory, located about fifty kilometers from Austin, could create 1,800 jobs, reports the Wall Street Journal. Samsung plans to begin work on the site next year and start producing chips in 2024. As Samsung has already produced chips for companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia, it is likely that the new plant will manufacture advanced chips for others, possibly using the 3nm process. This expansion comes as the global semiconductor shortage continues to pose significant challenges in many industries, from console makers to automakers. Kinam Kim, vice president and CEO of Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division, said: “In addition to our partners in Texas, we are grateful to the Biden Administration for creating an environment that supports companies like Samsung as we work to expand leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. We also thank the administration and Congress for their bipartisan support to swiftly enact federal incentives for domestic chip production and innovation.”
