At its Google I/O event, the company showcased many upcoming products such as the Pixel 6A, its new mid-range phone that costs USD 450, available for pre-order July 21. It also showed off the design of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, releasing this fall, and it confirmed the concurrent launch of the Pixel Watch, one of the the year’s most poorly kept secrets. One item on which no information had leaked though is Google’s foray into an area that no one expected, that of Android tablets.

Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services and head of the Pixel program, confirmed that a tablet is coming out in 2023 to round out the Pixel-product ecosystem. The images of the design that were presented, however, left observers a little skeptical, and downright snarky at times. Dan Seifert at The Verge writes that “The device that Google showed off brings to mind the front of a Samsung tablet from circa 2013 or 2014 with the back of an Amazon Fire HD 10”. Not exactly forward-looking… But 2023 is still a ways off, and Google has plenty of time to fine-tune. As the technical information on this tablet is slim, all we know is that it will come equipped with the in-house Tensor SoC. More to come…

The Verge, Mitchell Clark, “Google’s biggest announcements at I/O 2022.”

The Verge, Dan Seifert, “Google’s ‘premium’ Pixel Tablet sure doesn’t look very premium.”
