In any case, that’s the claim Microsoft makes in regards to its Chromium-based browser. “Edge will be the best performing browser on Windows 10 when Microsoft Edge version 91 releases later this week,” the Microsoft Edge team said in a blog post on Tuesday. “So, why can we say this? It’s simple: Startup boost and sleeping tabs.” Microsoft began rolling out its new startup acceleration feature in Edge in March, which makes the browser launch up to 41% faster. The new sleeping tabs feature, designed to improve browser performance, appeared earlier this year. Edge now automatically frees the system resources that had been tied up with inactive tabs, which allows new tabs to perform better and prevents the browser from processing in the background and hogging memory. Microsoft also revealed that it has submitted 5,300 commits to the Chromium project, which will in turn benefit Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. While sleeping tabs and startup acceleration are features unique to Edge, Microsoft has helped Google improve Chrome’s tab handling, and the rivals have worked together on a series of Chromium enhancements.
